Harmony's 3D Printing Prosthetics Program Benefits Communities

Engineering students at Harmony Science Academy - Laredo are learning about 3D prosthetics as part of their engineering class. Mr. Gurbey Demirturk and his students are now members of the 3D-printed prosthetics program. Recently, Harmony STEM educator, Mehmet Gokcek, designed and 3D-printed a prosthetic hand that was later donated to a disabled teenager with the help of a community organization called e-NABLE. “There is world of possibilities when it comes to 3D printing technology. One of which is creating and building custom-designed affordable prosthetics for those missing limbs and cannot pay for a prosthetic solution due to financial reasons”, said Mehmet Gokcek. Mr. Demirturk and his students were inspired by Mr. Gokcek’s initiative in Houston and they decided to bring the program to their community in Laredo. Houston Space Center Visits Harmony Science Academy

Houston Space Center CEO, Mr. Harris, and his education director, Mr. Daniel Newmyer, visited Harmony Science Academy-Houston where student ambassadors gave engaging tours of the STEM labs used to complete their STEM projects. The students presented their top of the line robots and showed how they've programed them to accomplish certain missions. Students also presented their microgravity project which was selected for space flight to International Space Station. This project aims to test the regeneration of worms in outer space. Mr. Harris and Mr. Newmyer showed great enthusiasm, engaging with our students and asking questions about their research. We would like to thank Houston Space Center executives for their time, and for spending their afternoon with our students.

WEX Foundation Visits San Antonio Gifted and Talented Students

Space Architect & Chairman of the WEX Foundation Mr. Sam Ximenes visited Harmony School of Innovation GT students in San Antonio last month. Mr. Ximenes spoke about the LEAP2 STEM Program that is used to address issues in lunar exploration, economic development, and mining. He brought a sample of simulated lunar dust for the students to see. Lunar dust is used to make concrete without water. The WEX Foundation uses LEAP2 as a framework to offer GT students the opportunity to learn more about careers in space. Our young gifted and talented students had a great time learning about such exciting careers, they were given the opportunity to touch the sand while listening to an interesting speaker like Mr. Ximenes. Garland Students Explore Astronomy via #PlaceBasedEd

The American Astronomical Society held its 229th Annual Meeting earlier this month at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center, during which they provided a Student Astronomy Outreach Event. Harmony Science Academy-Garland attended this event and got a close up look at some of the top astronomical inventions in the country. Students had the the opportunity to learn about the James Webb telescope straight from NASA. Hands on demonstrations and discussions from world famous scientists and engineers capped of a wonderful time for our students. This event hosts companies, space missions and research institutions that provide visitors with inside looks at the world of space and the innovative materials currently being used to learn more about Astronomy.  Learn more about the great opportunities AAS provides for students all around the nation by visiting https://aas.org
